In 2016, UNESCO held a conference on sustainable tourism in Cape Maclear. Mgoza Lodge was given the opportunity to work with Malawi National Parks and Wildlife, Malawi Ministry of Tourism, and the Malawi Ministry of Culture to create something special within our own community. We have helped introduce several workshops, classes, lessons, and cultural experiences. The fees are paid directly to the people who teach or host you, providing extra income for families and supporting local economy.
We have also started a rubbish collection with many of the other lodges. Paper, plastic, tins, bottle caps, and glass are reused by creating sketchbooks and journals, necklaces and bracelets, pot holders, place mats, glasses, jars, coin purses, and many other items that are sold in our recycling shop.
Eventually, we hope to construct 120 concrete bins to place around the village, in an effort to reduce waste on the beach and roads. For more information please visit http://www.capemaclear.org/
